How to adapt a social media video for YouTube advertising

A video of your restaurant, lodging property, or wellness studio can be a useful starting point for an ad. To adapt it, think about someone encountering your business for the first time. They may not know your profile or read the caption that accompanied the original post.

On October 1, 2026, Google published guidance on using existing assets in Demand Gen campaigns. The post also describes Asset Studio video creation with Gemini Omni using photos and website URLs, and recommends making changes gradually so they can be evaluated. Demand Gen is a Google Ads campaign type that can deliver content on YouTube and other Google surfaces.

Gather material around one offer

Define the service and action you want to present. For example, show a property’s rooms and direct visitors to check dates. This decision helps you choose which scenes to keep.

Gather the original file, supporting images, logo, current information, and destination link. Footage of the surrounding area can provide context, but you also need to show the advertised property. Restaurant preparation scenes should match the dishes or experience customers can actually purchase.

Confirm usage permissions

Check that you can use the video, photographs, music, and appearances of other people in advertising. If you worked with a creator, review which platforms, time period, and uses their permission covers.

Audio available for an organic social post does not automatically include permission for an ad or another platform. Keep the authorizations and replace assets whose commercial use you cannot confirm.

Write a script that stands on its own

Google’s ABCD creative principles for YouTube cover attention, branding, connection, and direction. In practical terms, present something interesting, make the business recognizable, show a relevant experience, and explain what the viewer can do next.

Here is an illustrative 25-second script for a fictional lodging property. The length organizes this example; it is not a universal YouTube requirement.

From 0 to 4 seconds: show arrival at the property and its name. A phrase introduces the offer, such as “A quiet stay for your next getaway.”

From 4 to 12 seconds: show real rooms and spaces the guest can use. Choose shots that explain the experience and match the accommodation being booked.

From 12 to 20 seconds: highlight a verifiable feature, such as a private terrace in the advertised room category. Add only the information the viewer needs at that moment.

From 20 to 25 seconds: present the action “Explore rooms and check dates,” with the brand visible. The link should lead to a page that makes this easy.

Adapt framing and duration

For Demand Gen videos, Google’s documentation recommends 1080 × 1920 pixels for vertical 9:16, 1920 × 1080 for horizontal 16:9, and 1080 × 1080 for square 1:1. It also includes vertical 4:5 at 1080 × 1350. Vertical 9:16 is recommended for Shorts.

The guide specifies a five-second minimum and states that videos shorter than ten seconds cannot serve on YouTube In-stream, meaning within the playback of other videos. Check the requirements for your chosen format and placements before exporting.

Reframe from the original file. Make sure people, products, and text remain visible. Enlarging a low-resolution file does not restore lost detail. Use placement previews and safe-zone guides to prevent the interface from covering important information.

Listen to the audio and review the video without sound. Captions should be readable and leave room for images and other text.

Prepare the ad text and destination

Demand Gen videos are hosted on YouTube; you can use an unlisted video. Unlisted means it does not appear as a regular public channel upload, although anyone with the link can view it and it can run as an ad.

The video ad documentation allows up to 40 characters for the headline and up to 90 for the long headline and description. Check the fields requested in your account and avoid repeating exactly the same information in each. The video can show the experience while the text adds a useful detail.

Open the link on a phone. If you invite viewers to check dates, review availability, terms, and access to booking. If you advertise a special menu, show its details. Demand Gen can include placements beyond YouTube; review the selected channels and where the ad is delivered.

If you use AI to produce variations, verify that it preserves the real spaces, products, text, and features of the offer. An attractive scene that changes the service may create inaccurate expectations.

Test one difference and record the learning

Compare two openings using the same offer and page, with a controlled test where available. If you compare a vertical video in Shorts with a horizontal video elsewhere, you are also comparing delivery contexts. You cannot attribute the entire difference to framing.

Connect views and clicks with the intended action. If booking ends on an external platform without measurement integration, record how much of the journey you can observe and use available confirmations to complete your evaluation.

Try this: take an existing video and write down its offer, necessary scenes, and final action. Then check permissions, format, and the destination page. Keep the script, files, and results to guide your next edit.
